Workshop: on Home and Migration with Jason Kwong & Yingying Zheng
A Special Event of the “Overload” Exhibition
Wind chimes delicate sound symbolise the vitality carried by the breeze. They only sing when the wind passes or someone approaches; otherwise, they fall silent. A chime hanging at an old address no longer rings, like a sealed memory quietly suspended in time. In places where no one returns, is there still a sound waiting to be awakened? Titled Silent Wind Chimes, this workshop invites participants to create a personal wind chime infused with memory and emotion, guided by artists Jason Kwong and Yingying Zheng. Inspired by their collaborative work Fated, the session will involve hands-on crafting using everyday materials such as plastic balls, beads, and shrinkable sheets. Through making, participants will engage with the emotional landscapes of migration and absence: What kinds of memories are preserved? What sounds have fallen silent in movement? And when “home” becomes a place one can no longer return to—can the chime still find its voice? Finished pieces can be taken home as a personal memento or left behind as part of a collective installation within the Overload exhibition—quiet echoes forming a shared field of memory.
